Medical Laboratory Technology is a profession that combines the challenges and rewards of both medicine and science.
Medical Laboratory Technicians perform a wide variety of laboratory procedures and work in both public and private laboratories serving the healthcare sector.
Medical and clinical laboratory technicians specialize in determining the presence, extent or absence of disease. They do this by performing a full range of routine laboratory procedures from simple blood screens to more complex tests to detect diseases such as cancer, coronary artery disease and diabetes.
The Registered Medical Laboratory Technician is an allied health professional qualified by academic and practical training to provide service in medical and clinical laboratory science.

You must complete the 2024 MLT application and the Nursing & Health Sciences Selective Admissions Program Application. You can download these from this webpage or email the Program Director/Department Chair below for information in January.

Certification
Graduates of the Tyler Junior College MLT Program are qualified to sit for national certification exams sponsored by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) Board of Certification (BOC), American Medical Technologists (AMT), or other certifying agencies.
Tyler Junior College Medical Laboratory Technology Program currently has a 3-year average (2020 - 86%, 2021 - 88%, and 2022 - 74%) of 83% ASCP Board of Certification pass rate for first-time examinees, and 100% AMT pass rate for 2021 and 2022 since the TJC MLT program joined AMT in 2021. The TJC MLT Program also has a 3-year average (2020, 2021, and 2022) of a 100% graduation rate and a 100% placement rate as determined by guidelines from The National Accreditation Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).

TJC is an open admissions college; however, acceptance into the Medical Laboratory Technology Program is limited. Acceptance into the program is reviewed by an Admissions Committee.
