TJC Arbor Day tree planting celebration set for March 5

TJC, The Tyler Trees Committee, Keep Tyler Beautiful and the Tyler Parks and Recreation Department will host a tree planting event to celebrate Arbor Day at noon Sunday, March 5, on our main campus.

The public is invited to bring their own shovels and volunteer to be part of this experience.

TJC’s main campus spans 137 acres and is home to numerous varieties of beautiful trees. Planting 50 new trees of various sizes and species will enhance the beauty of TJC and the City of Tyler for many generations to come.

According to Cody Goldman, City of Tyler’s arborist, “The City of Tyler has made tremendous replanting efforts within the public parks, but felt that it is time to get more people and organizations involved to make an even bigger impact in the urban forest effort. This project is a great opportunity to branch out and work with higher education in Tyler.”

The event begins with registration at noon on the front lawn of TJC’s Jenkins Hall. Volunteers are welcome to enjoy free drinks, snacks and light lunch and then join in the tree planting activities. There will be various educational booths relating to tree maintenance, planting and ecology. TJC’s Green Committee and other student organizations will have booths as well.

Funding for TJC’s Arbor Day celebration has been provided through a partnership between TJC and the City of Tyler Parks Department.
