TJC offers one-year program in real estate management

In Tyler Junior College’s new real estate management program, students can take the courses they need to be licensed realtors in one year or less.

“We had more than 50 students join the program in its first year,” said Charles Cowell, TJC professor in business management and computer information systems and coordinator of the real estate program.

“So far, 12 students have completed the TJC real estate management program and seven have passed their exam and are now licensed realtors.”

The TJC Real Estate Management program offers a broad-based knowledge of core areas within the real estate field.

In addition to the basic real estate principals, program topics include:
• Real estate law
• Contracts
• Mathematics
• Finances

Cowell said the courses are offered in a hybrid format, which means part online and part in-class discussion. Classes meet Tuesdays and Thursdays, on the TJC main campus.

Recent graduate Michelle Davis said, “I am so fortunate to have had an opportunity to go to TJC to start my career.”

Mandi Kirk graduated from the program in spring 2016 and is now a realtor working in Lindale.

“TJC was the start of my success,” Kirk said. “I really enjoyed having the opportunity to do most of the work online but also with the option to have class discussions. Mr. Cowell’s internship program gave me a great start and the confidence I needed to get going.

“With the knowledge I gained, I was able to pass the state and national exams on my first try.”

Spring 2016 graduate Nadia Hicks echoed Kirk’s views and praised Cowell’s teaching style.

“He gave us much more than textbook knowledge,” Hicks said. “His stories and experience in the real estate profession provided a point of reference which answered many questions.

“Plus, stressing the terminology and basic application was instrumental in passing the exam.”

Classes for the TJC real estate management program are offered each fall and spring.
