TJC brings home honors from journalism convention

Tyler Junior College students representing The DrumBeat and The Bell Tower student media organizations won 34 awards at this year’s Texas Intercollegiate Press Association (TIPA) Conference.

The conference took place in Corpus Christi in March. TIPA is the oldest state collegiate press associations in the nation. During its annual convention, students participate in multiple media contests, including radio, television, online, yearbook, magazine and newspaper. Students also attend workshops hosted by media professionals and interact with advisors from other colleges and universities.

“This year’s conference results provide more proof that Tyler Junior College sets the standard in media education,” said Rachel Jennische, professor and student media advisor.

“These students have worked hard and can hold their own against students from any college or university. I am proud of their accomplishments and know this record of success is just the beginning of long and distinguished careers.”

Six students traveled to the spring break conference. TIPA contests are open to both two-year and four-year college students; this year, 29 Texas schools and more than 270 students participated in the multimedia conference.
