TJC to host benefit car show on Saturday, May 20

Tyler Junior College will host a benefit Auto Show Special, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, May 20, on the TJC West Campus.

The TJC West Campus is located at 1530 SSW Loop 323 in Tyler.

The public is invited to attend the show and learn more about the TJC auto tech program. Admission to the event is free, and a hamburger lunch will be available for $3 per person.

“Anyone who would like to show their car, truck or bike is invited to participate,” said Todd Perry, TJC automotive technology program coordinator and professor.

Registration fee is $25 per vehicle, and lunch will be provided to participants.

All proceeds will go to the TJC Automotive Technology program.

Door prizes will be given throughout the day.

Event sponsors include: Torq’d Design, Randall Noe Auto Group, Hall Buick GMC, Al Hafner Tuning, Matco Tools Velocity Mazda and AutoNation Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Tyler.

For more information, contact Perry at tper@tjc.edu or 903-510-2070.

“The work of automotive technicians has evolved dramatically during the past two decades,” Perry said. “Our students learn to diagnose, identify parts, repair components and service vehicles equipped with hybrid drivetrains, active suspensions, satellite guidance systems and computer controlled engines, multi-speed automatic transmissions and four-wheel drive systems.”

The automotive laboratory on the TJC West Campus is designed to operate similarly to an actual automotive repair business, so students can hone your skills as a valuable team member while working on a fleet of 40 late-model vehicles, including eight hybrids and three diesels. Students are encouraged to work on their own vehicles as well.

Job opportunities are very good as some employers report difficulty finding workers with the right skills and education, especially in alternative fuel or computer systems. Locally, earnings range from $19,100 to $58,500 annually.
