Concert pianist Jovanni-Rey de Pedro to perform guest recital April 6 at TJC

Filipino-American pianist Jovanni-Rey de Pedro has appeared on five continents as a performer, educator, collaborator and speaker.

As part of Tyler Junior College’s Arts Festival month, he will perform a guest recital 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 6, in Jean Browne Theatre on the TJC main campus. Admission is free.

Winner of the Boesendorfer Stipendium in Vienna and the Isabelle Bond Gold Medal for Performance Excellence in London, de Pedroalso acquired top prizes in several competitions including across the United States, Canada, Spain, Austria and England.

He recently won first place at the American Protégé International Piano and Strings Competition, which led to a Carnegie Hall performance. His artistic and educational activities have been further supported by grants from the Solti Foundation of Belgium, Arts Council of Ireland, Vienna Cultural Affairs Office, and the University of Idaho. 

A California native, he holds performance degrees from the Vienna Conservatory in Austria and Trinity College of Music in London, and a doctorate in piano pedagogy and performance from the University of Michigan, where he researched the music of Friedrich Gulda and Alberto Ginastera. He has served on the faculty of Millsaps College, and was appointed Assistant Professor of Piano and Piano Pedagogy and co-director of the preparatory division at the University of Idaho's Lionel Hampton School of Music in 2014.

Currently, he serves as the advisor for the University of Idaho’s MTNA Collegiate Chapter, one of the most active chapters in the Pacific Northwest. Over the past three years, he has taken members of the chapter to perform and present research in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Dallas, Colombia, Jacksonville, and Australia.
