TJC plans 3nd annual Arts Festival throughout April

Tyler Junior College has announced its 3rd annual Arts Festival, to be held throughout the month of April on the TJC main campus.

The arts festival is a collaboration of “The Bell Tower Arts Journal,” International Day, Tyler Museum of Art, and the TJC departments of art, music, theater, speech, dance and visual communications.
All of the events are open to the public, but tickets are required for some events.

Student involvement is key to the festival’s success; and each year, a competition is held among TJC students, to create an original Arts Festival logo. This year’s winner was Willow Lanchester, a TJC art major and Tyler native.

The festival will offer performances, exhibits, student film screenings, guest speakers, and more at various times and locations across the TJC campus and at the Tyler Museum of Art.

“Last year, we expanded our original 10-day festival into a month-long event,” said Dr. Linda Gary, dean of the TJC School of Humanities, Communications and Fine Arts and an Arts Festival organizer, “and it was so well received, we’re continuing that tradition this year.

“We have so much exceptional work by our talented performing and visual arts students and faculty, it’s easy for us to fill a month with cultural arts events.”

Gary said the TJC Arts Festival offers something from each of the areas of TJC’s Cultural Arts District, including musicians, singers, dance, art and a play.

A few of the featured events include:
• Coffee House recitals at noon each Wednesday, at Tyler Museum of Art, featuring a different musical group each week
• “Brickstreet Anthology: Photographs by Robert Langham,” a photo exhibit of Tylerites by Langham, a local photographer and TJC professor, at Tyler Museum of Art
• Jolanda van den Berg, guest speaker for International Day, Tuesday, April 18, Apache Rooms, Rogers Student Center
• “DanceFest,” by TJC’s Academy of Dance, Saturday and Sunday, April 22 and 23, in Wise Auditorium
• “Peter and the Star Catcher,” Theatre TJC’s final production of the 2016-17 season, set Wednesday-Sunday, April 26-30, in Jean Browne Theatre

CBS 19 is the media sponsor for this year's event.
