TJC art club, culinary students host 2nd annual benefit ‘Souper Bowl’ event Feb. 4

TJC students are once again combining their creative talents to host their second annual “Souper Bowl.”

During the event, participants get a ceramic bowl created by art faculty and students, and homemade soup prepared by culinary students.

The event will be held 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, in the TJC Culinary Arts building on the TJC central campus.

Admission is $10 per person, and proceeds will benefit TJC’s Phi Theta Kappa Resource Center. Handmade bowls will be available while supplies last.

The event was modeled after Empty Bowls, a global grassroots movement by artists and crafts people to raise funds for food-related charities to care for and feed the hungry in their communities.

“Our first event last year went over really well,” said Dave Funk TJC art professor and Honors program director. “It checks all the right boxes: The ceramics students and faculty get to make art and give back a little, the cooking students get to practice their craft and feed people on campus, plus it helps to raise awareness for both programs and our campus resource center.”

The TJC Souper Bowl menu includes:
• Broccoli cheddar
• Caldo de Res (Mexican beef soup)
• Chicken and sausage gumbo
• Chili
• Cream of chicken
• Tortilla soup

Larry Matson, TJC Culinary Arts department chair/professor said, “We have collaborated with the art department before on creating special pots that help with extending the life of the produce we use in our lab. We’ve also enjoyed working together on this event.”

Funk added, “The menu they’ve come up with looks amazing and we’ll have a lot of bowls on hand, so we hope everyone will join us and have some soup for a good cause.”
