Hazlewood Act

The Hazlewood Exemption Act is a Texas benefit that provides qualified veterans, spouses, and dependent children with an education benefit of up to 150 hours of tuition exemption and required fee charges at Texas public institutions of higher education. The exemption does not include living expenses, books, supplies, travel, and non-tuition-related fees. The information below lists the ways you may qualify for the Hazlewood Exemption and the documentation you must submit to be considered for the benefit. Please visit the Texas Veterans Commission website for more information on the Hazlewood Act and eligibility requirements.

Note: All required documentation for benefit consideration must be received by the Veteran and Military Services Office no later than one week before classes start to guarantee certification of classes.

Applying for the exemption for the first time:

Veterans using the exemption:

  • Submit a TJC VA Enrollment Certification Request Form
    • Submit a FAFSA and email proof of submission to Veterans@tjc.edu (Strongly Recommended, but Not Required)
    • Once your federal financial aid is processed, email your College Financing Plan to Veterans@tjc.edu. Click HERE for help with this step. 
  • Submission of Hazlewood Application to Veterans@tjc.edu (Note: This application must be signed and submitted for each term the student plans to register into.)
  • To verify eligibility for the Veteran’s or dependent’s federal education benefits, Certificates of Eligibility (CoE) may be obtained by completing an application on the Veterans Affairs website. Once received, this certificate can be emailed to Veterans@tjc.edu or dropped off at the Rogers Student Center.
    • If the Veteran’s final discharge is prior to 9/11/2001 the Certificate of Eligibility is not required for the Veteran.
  • Registration with the Hazlewood Student Hours Online Database - Once registered, log in and print the school's Account Overview page (even if hours show zero).
  • Certificate of Separation or Discharge (DD Form 214) - The copy you provide must be legible and contain the place of entry, home of record at the time of entry, the character of service, length of service, and dates of service.
  • Veterans only, please provide official military transcripts to both the Office of the Registrar at Registrars@tjc.edu and the Veteran and Military Services Office at Veterans@tjc.edu:

Legacy Act - Veterans Transferring Unused Hours to an Eligible Child: 

  • Submit a TJC VA Enrollment Certification Request Form
  • Submission of Hazlewood Application to Veterans@tjc.edu (Note: This application must be signed and submitted for each term the student plans to register into.)
  • Registration with the Hazlewood Student Hours Online Database - The student and veteran must register for their own accounts. Once registered, log in and print the school's Account Overview page (even if hours show zero).
  • Certificate of Separation or Discharge (DD Form 214) - The copy you provide must be legible and contain the place of entry, home of record at the time of entry, the character of service, length of service, and dates of service.
  • A Certificate of Eligibility is required for veterans who served after September 11, 2001. The eligibility certificates should be in the name of the student applying to use the exemption and may be obtained by completing an application.
  • Relationship Documentation - a copy of the student's birth certificate, adoption papers, or a copy of the veteran's most recent tax return transcript showing the student claimed as a dependent.

Spouse/Child of 100% Disabled or Deceased Veteran:

  • Submit a TJC VA Enrollment Certification Request Form
  • Submission of Hazlewood Application to Veterans@tjc.edu (Note: This application must be signed and submitted for each term the student plans to register into.)
  • Registration with the Hazlewood Student Hours Online Database - Once registered, log in and print the school's Account Overview page (even if hours show zero).
  • Certificate of Separation or Discharge (DD Form 214) - The copy you provide must be legible and contain the place of entry, home of record at the time of entry, the character of service, length of service, and dates of service.
  • Documentation from DoD or VA of a veteran's service-related death or 100-percent disability
  • Relationship Documentation - a copy of the student's birth certificate, adoption papers, or the veteran's most recent tax return showing the student claimed as a dependent.
