Bacterial Meningitis Vaccination

As of January 1, 2012, Texas law requires all entering students to show evidence of an initial bacterial meningitis vaccine or a booster dose during the five years preceding, and at least ten days prior, to the first day of the first semester in which the student initially enrolls at a Texas higher education institution.

You need the vaccine if you are:

  • Under 22 years old
  • A first-time student of an institution of higher education or private or independent institution of higher education
  • A transfer student
  • A student who previously attended an institution of higher education before January 1, 2012, is enrolling again following a break in enrollment of at least one fall or spring semester.

Proof of bacterial meningitis immunization or exemption must be submitted on the listed due date, or you will be dropped from your classes, as Texas state law requires.

Due Date by Start Term

You can submit your proof of vaccination or exemption documentation by:

To obtain an Exemption from Meningococcal Vaccination Requirements for Reasons of Conscience visit https://co-request-jc.dshs.texas.gov/.

Note- Approved quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccines protect against four meningococci strains that cause disease (A, C, Y and W-135). The Meningococcal Group B (MenB) vaccines, which only protect against one strain (B), do not meet the requirement of a quadrivalent vaccine given within five years.

In addition to your personal physician or some retail pharmacies, Bacterial meningitis vaccinations may be available at a discounted price at the following locations. Please contact the facilities directly to determine cost and required documentation.
