Student wins award for logo design

The Tyler Lodging Association unveiled its new logo design at the yearend meeting, held at the Historic Aviation Memorial Museum on Nov. 18, and the logo's designer, Tyler Junior College student Bryana Alvidrez, was presented a check for $500, said Steven Cottrell, TLA president and general manager of Fairfield Inn by Marriott.

The Tyler Lodging Association is a business league formed to promote tourism in Tyler through a network of hotel and lodging properties, local attractions, restaurants and the Tyler Convention & Visitor's Bureau.

"The Tyler Lodging Association began our search for a new logo at the beginning of 2009. We wanted to involve the community in the project and decided to partner with Tyler Junior College graphic design students," Cottrell said. "The association contacted Rebecca Stewart, professor at TJC, about the possibility of the project. Ms. Stewart made the logo design project part of her fall semester classroom assignment. The TLA offered the student designer a cash prize of $500 if their design was selected."

Miss Alvidrez also received an assortment of other prizes, donated by East Texas Symphony Orchestra, Cherokee Trace Drive-Thru Safari Park, Historic Aviation Memorial Museum and The Waterpark at The Villages.

Miss Alvidrez, of Longview, is a 2008 graduate of Hallsville High School.

"She has always thought that a creative type of career would suit her, but it wasn't until she came to TJC that she actually had experience with graphic design," Cottrell said. "She is now a sophomore in her third semester and plans to graduate with her associate's degree in the spring."

Miss Alvidrez hopes to transfer to a four-year university and to obtain her bachelor's degree in graphic design.

"The best kind of job to have is one that you love to do!" she Alvidrez said.
