Harmony & Understanding presents ‘Broadway Blast’

“Broadway Blast,” a musical revue by Tyler Junior College’s premier performance group Harmony & Understanding, will feature the works of Stephen Sondheim plus a heavy dose of “Hairspray.”
The performance will be 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 2, in Wise Auditorium on the TJC main campus. Admission is free.
Selections include showstoppers from “Gypsy,” a collection of tunes from “Sondheim: A Celebration,” and an up-tempo medley from “Hairspray.”
The production is under the musical direction of Andrea Trent, Harmony & Understanding director and TJC professor of voice, with choreography by Heather Samuelson.
Harmony & Understanding members and their hometowns are: Taylor Chapman, Forney; Irene Duran, Jacksonville; Michaela Ellis, Tyler; Maya Foster, Tyler; Adam Jimenez, Canton; Jamichael Kilson, Tyler; Erin O’Quinn, Tyler; Johanna Ramsey, Winnsboro; Justin Redmond, Red Oak; Nicholas Sheffield, Tyler; and Kashyra Thompson, Texarkana.
Sound technician is Brandon Elliott, Murchison.
High school groups participating in Friday’s Harmony & Understanding Show Choir Festival will join the group on stage for the final “Hairspray” number, “You Can’t Stop the Beat.” Festival clinician is Beth Gove of Leander ISD.
Participating groups and their directors are: Encore from John Tyler High School, Vicki Hughes; combined choirs from Whitney High School, Sheri Hayes; and Showstoppers from Canton High School, Angela Russell.
Before the performance, the TJC Alumni Association will host a reception for the Harmony & Understanding alumni group, Harmony Gold. The event will be held 6:30 p.m. Friday in Tyler Museum of Art on the TJC main campus. All former Harmony & Understanding members are invited to attend.
