TJC announces spring musical, ‘Sweeney Todd’

Published Monday, 10th February 2014

TJC’s spring musical, Stephen Sondheim’s “Sweeney Todd,” tells the chilling tale of a 19th-century British barber with a serious axe to grind.

After being imprisoned 15 years on false charges, he returns to London bent on exacting revenge with a straight razor and a pie-making accomplice named Mrs. Lovett.

With music and lyrics by Sondheim and libretto by Hugh Wheeler, “Sweeney Todd” won eight Tony Awards in 1979, including Best Musical. Angela Lansbury was named Best Actress in a Musical for her role as Mrs. Lovett.

Under the stage direction of Rebecca Faulds-Howard, TJC theater professor, and musical direction of Andrea Trent, TJC voice professor, the production features a robust cast of theater and music students as well as a live orchestra.

Performances are 7:30 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday, Feb. 26-March 1, in Wise Auditorium on the TJC main campus.

Tickets go on sale Wednesday, Feb. 19, in the TJC Box Office. Box office hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. weekdays. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students as well as seniors ages 60 and up. Beginning Feb. 19, reservations can be made by calling 903-510-2212. Parental guidance is suggested.
