TJC professor earns clinical research award

Published Tuesday, 21st May 2013

A TJC nursing professor recently earned an award from the Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP) at the organization’s global conference in Orlando, Fla.

Debbie A. Waldrop, a professor in the TJC Associate Degree Nursing program and part-time research consultant, received the Advancing Public Awareness in Clinical Research Award, which recognizes an individual who has contributed to the public’s understanding of clinical research and participation in studies, and to the advancement of the profession.

Waldrop was recognized for her commitment to educating the public regarding clinical research across more than 20 years in the profession through appearances on television, development of patient education days, and presentations on research participation to potential volunteers and on research careers to middle school girls, among other efforts.

A certified clinical research consultant since 1992, she has managed Phase I through IV pharmaceutical studies and various government-sponsored studies, developed and participated in investigator-initiated studies, established three clinical research offices and various training programs for patients, staff, and investigators, served as a member of an Institutional Review Board and on multiple boards of directors, published in journals, and presented at the ACRP Global Conference & Exhibition and other national conferences. For ACRP, she served with the former Site Managers Forum in 2004-10 and on the membership committee of the North Texas Chapter in 1998-2000.

Waldrop said her award was due, in part, to her years of participation in TJC’s Expanding Your Horizons program, a day of workshops promoting mathematics and science careers to middle school girls. Her program, “Gummy Bears vs. Jelly Beans: Research in Action,” introduced girls to clinical research as a career path.

“TJC serves the community in so many ways,” she said. “I am blessed to be a part of it.”
