Tyler Junior College’s two jazz ensembles brought home group and individual honors from the Temple Jazz Festival held Saturday in Temple.

Both groups received first-division ratings from each of the three judges and were presented plaques for their superior performances.

The TJC jazz ensembles are under the direction of Heather Mensch, TJC professor of jazz studies and applied low brass.

Fourteen TJC musicians were singled out and awarded Outstanding Musicianship Awards for either a solo they performed or because judges were impressed by their individual talents.

Individual award recipients were: Josh Alderete, Pasadena, drums; Max Dannenberg, Hawkins, trombone; Jeff Dees, New London, bass trombone; James Johnson, Bullard, alto sax; Riley Lawson, Canton, guitar; Jose Lopez, Commerce, trombone; Brandon Machristie, Tyler, bass trombone; Ty Matthews, Canton, piano; Forrest Morgan, Tyler, tenor sax; Chris Pitts, Bremerton, Wash., bass and drums; Justin Ridgeway, Hawkins, alto sax; Brian Sanders, Tyler, piano; and Kendall Smith, Fort Worth, trombone.

The TJC jazz ensembles will perform their final concert of the year 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 26, in Wise Auditorium. Admission is free.
