Science center offers spring break hours

Published Wednesday, 6th March 2013

Comets and pi are on the schedule next week at the Center for Earth & Space Science Education.

The science center is extending its hours to accommodate East Texas students who are out of school for spring break. It is located at 1411 E. Lake St., on the TJC main campus.

Spring break hours are:
• 10:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday, March 12-16
• Noon-5 p.m. Sunday, March 17
• The center is closed Mondays

In anticipation of the PanSTARRS comet, estimated to be visible on Saturday, March 9, the center staff has created a few informative YouTube videos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NS8Ild1DKzk&feature=youtu.be.

On Thursday, March 14 (aka 3/14), the center will host a Pi Day in honor of the mathematical constant, 3.14, with pizza “pi” served from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

“Science on the Half Shell” is the current science center exhibit and features the study of bivalve mollusks, which include clams, scallops, oysters and mussels.
Through the use of three interactive stations, the exhibit explores the principles of evolutionary biology and provides an understanding of how the tree of life of this commonplace and familiar group of animals has had meaningful applications on our everyday lives.
