Baylor visiting professor, church historian Bebbington to speak Nov. 9 at TJC

Dr. David Bebbington will be the guest speaker at Tyler Junior College’s second in a series of President John Tyler Lectures.

The event will be held 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, in the Admiral Inman Room (1109), in Jenkins Hall on the TJC main campus.

Admission is free and the public is invited to attend. The program will last about an hour.

The lecture series is named in honor of President John Tyler, who annexed Texas into the United States in 1845 and for whom the city of Tyler is named.

Bebbington is Distinguished Visiting Professor of History at Baylor University.

His will discuss revivalism in the Republic of Texas, as seen at Washington-on-the-Brazos in 1841, when Judge Baylor and the Missionary Baptist debated the Primitive Baptists and Campbellites. He will explore “the struggle for the soul of Texas” and take questions at the close of his remarks.

He has written 20 books on church history, including: “Baptists Through the Centuries,” “Holiness in Nineteenth-Century England,” and “Evangelicism: Comparative Studies of Popular Protestantism in North America, the British Isles and Beyond, 1700-1990.”

“We’re excited to have Dr. Bebbington on our campus. His knowledge of church history is extensive and we look forward to his illuminating discussion,” said Dr. Jeffrey Owens, chair of the TJC history and geography department.

Bebbington earned his Ph.D. from Cambridge University. He is a professor at the University of Stirling (U.K.) and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

The event is sponsored by the TJC Department of History and Geography and the Walter Prescott Webb Historical Society.
