Medical Office Management

The Medical Office Management program is committed to meeting the needs of the medical community by providing well-qualified employees who understand the principles of medical office work.

Tyler Junior College offers options for a career in the medical office field:

  • Medical Insurance Coding Specialist Certificate of Proficiency
  • Career advancement through individual courses that provide opportunities for lifelong learning in a changing medical environment

Medical office professionals perform highly specialized work requiring knowledge of medical administrative procedures. They are responsible for a variety of duties necessary to run an organization efficiently. Depending on acquired skills and education, duties can include the following tasks:

  • Office assistant - Greet and check in patients, answer telephones, schedule appointments, update medical records, and collect co-pays.
  • Patient account representative - Post charges and payments, handle collections, schedule appointments, arrange for hospital admissions and lab.
  • Medical information specialist - Update and file patient medical records.
  • Insurance specialist - Complete insurance forms, obtain pre-authorizations, handle billing and collections.
  • Coding specialist - Code surgeries and procedures, reconcile claims, and conduct appeals.
  • Office manager - Act as liaison between physician and staff, order supplies, prepare statistical reports, review personnel performance and work schedules.
