Food Handlers Certification

A two-hour program for food handlers covering personal hygiene, safe food handling, and food bacteriology. Upon completion of this course you will be issued a certificate good for three years, satisfying the health department requirements for working in a food establishment Emphasis on personal hygiene, safe food handling, and food bacteriology. (2 hrs.)

Classes are held the second Monday of the month at TJC’s West Campus, RTDC 104. You register for a morning or an afternoon class at the door with payment. Morning classes are from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., and afternoon classes are from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Certified Food Manager (CFM)

To meet the requirements of the Texas Department of Health and the Smith County Public Health District, each retail food establishment must employ at least one certified food manager. Certification must be obtained by passing an examination approved by the Texas Department of Health and meeting all requirements of THSC, Chapter 438, Subchapter G, and 25 TAC §229.176 (relation to Certified Food Manager). This course is the 16-hour certification program for owners and operators of establishments which prepare and serve food to the public. Topics include methods of proper food storage, techniques for sanitary food service preparation, employee sanitation, pest control, accident prevention, housekeeping management, sanitation regulations and standards, and facility conditions which contribute to outbreaks of food-borne disease; followed by the TDH certification exam.

CFM Refresher and Exam

This refresher course consists of four hours of instruction on food safety topics which include food-borne disease and protection of food, food service facilities, sanitary habits for food handlers, management of food safety; followed by the TDH certification exam.
