Parent PLUS Loans

Parents of a dependent undergraduate student may borrow funds under the Parent PLUS (Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students) program of behalf of the student. Parents can borrow up to the cost of education minus other financial aid the student receives. Parents must have a good credit history to qualify.

Repayment of Direct PLUS loans begins 60 days after the last disbursement of the loan. You can request to defer repayment while the student is enrolled at least half time. Interest is charged during all periods.

Direct PLUS funds will post to the students account to cover any balance due. Any remaining funds will be issued as explained in the “Refund” section of the Financial Aid Handbook.

To apply for a Parent Plus Loan:

  1. Go to http://www.studentloans.gov/, Click Sign In and log in to the website.
  2. Click Start PLUS Application Process
  3. Enter parent information (parent is the borrower) and the year in which you are applying for a PLUS loan.
  4. Enter student's information and who you want to receive the refund (parent or student).
  5. Select the state (Texas) and school (Tyler Junior College School Code #003648)/
  6. You will be given a choice to apply for the maximum amount you are eligible or a specific amount.  If you chose to apply for a limited amount, remember the student is limited in the amount of aid that can be awarded.  Carefully consider the amount you choose to apply for.
  7. Click Submit.

TJC will receive the application within 3-5 business days. 

If your application was approved, the award will be made to the student’s account on Apache Access.  You will then be required to complete a PLUS Master Promissory Note (MPN).

If your application was denied, an increase will be made to the student’s loan awards, according to their eligibility.  This may take up to 2 weeks.

To Complete PLUS MPN:

  1. Go to http://www.studentloans.gov/, Click Sign In and log in to the website.Click on SIGN IN.  
  2. Once signed in, click Complete MPN and select Parent PLUS.
  3. Follow the directions and click Submit.
