Tyler Junior College has three credited vocal ensembles and two non-credited ensembles that split from the Concert Choir, making it one of the larger junior college choral programs in the state. The TJC ensembles have performed all over the world including Austria, Germany, Japan, and in many USA states including Hawaii.
Applied voice lessons are one on one lessons with a TJC vocal faculty member. During a typical lesson, time is spent improving vocal technique, learning songs in English, Italian, French, German, and sometimes Spanish or Latin, as well as the emotional aspects of performing. Lessons are classical in nature, increasing volume, range, breath control, agility, posture, etc.
Applied lessons are recommended for those students who read music, have sung in a choir in high school, or have a good understanding of how to sing. Those students interested in voice lessons who may not have as much experience are encouraged to consider Class Voice for a semester, before attempting Applied lessons. Concert Choir is the largest non-auditioned mixed vocal ensemble and is open to any student regardless of their major. This choir performs a balanced and wide range of choral literature from classics, spirituals, and contemporary musical selections. Past performances include appearances with the Vienna Boys Choir in Austria (2006) and GRAMMY-winning artist Cynthia Clawson in 2010. The concert choir is conducted by Dr. James Henderson.
Harmony & Understanding is an auditioned premier show choir founded in 1970. Harmony’s repertoire ranges from standard classic-pop and Broadway music to modern day hits. Each performance includes high powered, energy driven singing and dancing. Performances are staged professionally and are adaptable to small community venues as well as larger performance halls. Harmony is in demand across the East Texas community and beyond. The group performs annual Pops Concert w/TJC Jazz Ensemble in the fall and Broadway Blast in the spring. Auditions are held in March and April. Harmony & Understanding is led by Andrea Trent.
Chamber Singers is a highly competitive auditioned group of mixed voices that performs a cappella choral literature. Most musical selections are from the Renaissance period with an emphasis on Madrigal performances of the 16th and 17th century. Some contemporary music written in the madrigal style are also performed at on campus concerts. The Chamber Singers are led by Dr. James Henderson.
Opera Workshop is offered for credit during the second eight weeks of the spring semester. Individual scenes or full staged productions provide performance opportunities for music, dance and theatre students. The course includes in depth background study of each character and scene and is completely produced by the students with piano accompaniment.
In spring 2010, the first annual performance included individual scenes from 12 different shows with 24 singers participating. Scenes from operas were staged with minimal sets, lighting, costumes and choreography all coordinated by the students. This year’s scenes were from Dido and Aeneas, The Magic Flute, Don Giovanni, Carmen, The Maid as Mistress and The Merry Widow.
