Tyler Junior College professor Jae Jerkins will discuss the philosophy of science for the October Public Science Lecture Series at the Center for Earth & Space Science Education at TJC.
The event will be held 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at the TJC science center, located at 1411 E. Lake St., on the main campus. Admission is free, and the event is open to all ages.

In his lecture topic, “The Scope and Philosophy of Science,” Jerkins will introduce the history and philosophy of science — from its beginnings in natural philosophy to the proliferation of the sub-disciplines of modern science. Included will be a historical discussion of the scope of scientific inquiry, what kinds of questions scientists can answer, and what falls outside of their purview.
Jerkins is a humanities and philosophy professor at TJC, where he teaches undergraduate courses in philosophy, ethics, world religions and humanities. He holds graduate degrees from Florida State University in humanities (the philosophy of religion) and the history and philosophy of science, under Dr. Michael Ruse. He is pursuing a Ph.D. in modern Jewish philosophy from The University of Texas at Dallas.
He serves on the Tyler Darwin Day committee and has presented on the philosophy of science at the UT Biomedical Research Center. He is active in regional meetings of the American Academy of Religion, and the Modern Language Association. His scholarly publications have appeared in the “Florida Philosophical Review,” the “ERAS Journal” of Monash University in Australia, and the “Curio Project” at UT Dallas.
