More than 1,200 potential Apaches and their parents braved Saturday’s stormy weather to attend Tyler Junior College’s Apache Preview Day held Saturday on the TJC main campus.
“Apache Preview Day is a half-day showcase where future students and their parents can get an up-close look at our beautiful campus and the many educational opportunities we have to offer,” said Claire Mizell, TJC director of admissions.
Participants toured the TJC campus and met with faculty, deans and academic advisors, got a look at campus activities and organizations, and participated in informative sessions on financial aid, scholarships and the Presidential Honors Program.
Eric Ramirez of Longview came to learn more about TJC’s Diagnostic Medical Sonography program.
“I work part time as an orderly at a hospital,” Ramirez said. “I enjoy working in the medical setting and I know that I want to do something in patient care, and a few people who work in sonography suggested this program to me.”
Zachary Zamzow and his family traveled more than six hours from their hometown of Three Rivers, located between San Antonio and Corpus Christi.
“I’m transferring from another community college because TJC has one of the best surveying and mapping programs in the state,” Zamzow said.
His mother, Leatha Zamzow, said, “It’s a long way from home for him, but we know this is where he needs to be. This program came highly recommended.”
TJC offers more than 130 degree and certificate programs, including a Bachelor of Science degree in dental hygiene and a new Bachelor of Applied Technology in healthcare technology and medical systems, as well as extensive workforce training and technical programs. In addition to academics, TJC has nationally ranked athletics and performing arts programs, all at about one-third of the cost of a four-year institution.
