Tyler Junior College Vision Care Technology provides an educational program to prepare students to gain occupational competency as a certified vision care technician. Program students develop the skills necessary to fill prescriptions for glasses and contact lenses and to perform various procedures and diagnostic tests in order to assist the doctor in the eye examination and treatment process. As a competency based educational program with a state of the art facility, Vision Care Technology is committed to meeting the staffing needs of the ophthalmic profession. The program graduates are actively recruited by vision care practitioners as dispensing opticians, optical laboratory technicians, contact lens technicians, optometric technicians, and ophthalmic medical personnel.
Tyler Junior College Vision Care Technology Program Goals and Objectives The main purpose of vision care education is to develop skilled technicians capable of serving creatively in our society and of improving the skills of vision care professionals in line with their clarified values. The Tyler Junior College Vision Care Technology program is dedicated to the preparation of men and women to qualify as valuable members of the allied health profession, who will share in the service of eye care. The Tyler Junior College Vision Care Technology program provides and educational program to prepare students to gain occupational competency as a vision care technician. The program also endeavors to prepare each student to successfully complete the American Board of Opticianry Examination, Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology Certification Examination, National Paraoptometric Registry Examination, and the National Contact Lens Examiners Examination. This is carried out by employing capable faculty, providing the necessary equipment and materials, as well as counseling and guidance needed by the student. The program is committed to eliminating hazardous waste and to reduce non-hazardous waste to the minimum levels economically and technically practical, and to be in full compliance with all federal and state environmental regulations. The student is prepared to function responsibly in the ophthalmic business society by following necessary regulations established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Federal Drug Administration (FDA), the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). At the core of the program is an emphasis on developing communication and critical thinking skills regarding vision care. Thus, vision care students will find their learning experience rewarding and interesting and they will be able to function in the profession of vision care, in serving not only the community, but themselves and society as a whole.
