1. Complete The TJC admissions application in the catalog and submit it to the admissions office at: Tyler Junior College 2. Have official copies of all high school and college transcripts mailed to Tyler Junior College. 3. Take the COMPASS test at any college or university. You may schedule a time to take the test at TJC by calling the TJC testing center at (903) 510-2617. You do not have to retake the test if you have taken it recently. 4. Asked Questions (FAQ)
When Do Classes Start? There is only one class of vision care technicians each year. Classes begin in the fall semester. Check the Tyler Junior College schedule of classes for the start date for each year. How Long Is The Program? The TJC Vision Care Technology program is a one-year certificate program with an optional associate degree plan. The certificate program actually lasts approximately 11 months. There is a full fall and spring semester. There is an eight-week summer session. Normally the program will begin in late August and end in late July. The associate degree plan will take an additional two semesters. Can I Start In The Spring Or Summer? You may not began taking vision care courses in the spring or summer because most of the vision care classes in the fall semester are prerequisites for classes in the spring and summer. You must begin taking vision care courses in the fall semester. You may begin taking the general education courses and some technical support courses in the fall, spring, or summer. Contact the program director to assist you in developing a course order. How Long Are Class Days? Generally, the classes start at approximately 8:00 A.M. Two days per week classes will end at approximately 12:00 noon. Three days per week classes will end at approximately 3:40 P.M. Are Classes Offered At Night Or On Weekends? Occasionally some courses are offered at night. Presently, no courses are offered on weekends. Are Any Classes Offered Through Correspondence? Not at this time Can I Receive Financial Aid? Financial Aid is available for vision care students who qualify. Please contact the Tyler Junior College Financial Aid Office at (903) 510-2385, to determine if you may be eligible for a grant, scholarship, or student loans. This is a lengthy process so you should contact that office as soon as possible. Will I Get Much Actual Hands-on Training? Yes! The Vision Care Technology program is a competency based educational program designed to meet the employers needs. The program is equipped with a modem optical laboratory and vision care clinic. The students receive extensive hands-on training in all areas of vision care. Our optical dispensary is open to the general public during the spring semester of every year where the students are responsible in fulfilling the eyewear needs of the patients that come to the schools optical clinic. The employers are confident that our students can start to work and be immediately productive. Do I Have To Take The TASP Test? The Vision Care Technology certificate program is TASP waived. You are not required to take the TASP Test in order to take and complete the certificate program. You are still required to take the friendlier COMPASS placement test at any testing center that offers the COMPASS. These COMPASS scores are used as a portion of your evaluation for acceptance into the program. Before you will be allowed to take any of the general education courses in the associate degree plan, a TASP Test score must be on file at TJC. You may schedule a time to take any placement test at TJC by calling the TJC testing center at (903) 510-2617. You do not have to retake a test if you have taken it recently. Is The TJC Vision Care Technology Program Respected Throughout The Ophthalmic Profession? Yes! There are many excellent vision care technicians throughout the country that graduated from Vision Care Technology at TJC. Our program is endorsed and recognized by the Texas Ophthalmic Professionals Society and the Texas Optometric Association as an excellent training facility in vision care. Is It Easy To Get A Job After I Complete The Program? Yes! Every graduate that wants a job gets a job! Many doctors and optical chains from all over the country seek technicians from Tyler Junior College. Even the military recruits our graduates as enlisted and reserve technicians. Tyler Junior College has a career development department designed to place every vision care program graduate into the work force. The career development department assists the student in developing a resume' and portfolio. A copy of the portfolio will be kept on file at TJC for the life of the student. The portfolio may then be given to potential employers who are looking for TJC Vision Care Technology graduates with work experience. What additional supplies will I need to purchase other than books? Needed supplies for the students of Vision Care Technology. 1. lab jacket ($20 - 3 0) 2. scientific calculator ($8 - 15) 3. protractor 4. drawing compass 5. 10 spiral notebooks 100 sheets each or a large three ring binder with paper and dividers 6. a small package of 1/4" grid paper 7. an extra fine point red and a black permanent marker 8. 4 three prong folders 9. pens & pencils 10.
