TJC sets new record for spring semester enrollment

Spring semester enrollment at TJC reached a 90-year high with 11,427 students, a 7.3 percent increase over Spring 2016.

According to TJC Provost and Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs Dr. Juan E. Mejia, “This significant enrollment increase can be attributed to the commitment by the faculty and staff of the institution to promote access to higher education, to the efforts from visionary leaders from our region who are working to promote a successful college-going culture, and to the approximately 120 degrees and certificates options offered by the College.”

TJC, one of the nation’s premier community colleges, has as one of its priorities to serve as a catalyst for economic development by strategically assessing marketplace demand and constantly evaluating the need for relevant programs of study that attract and retain students while meeting the needs of business and industry from the region.

In addition, following the December 2016 designation for TJC as a Level II baccalaureate granting institution by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools/Commission on Colleges, the College began offering a baccalaureate degree in dental hygiene. TJC is the first and only community or junior college in Texas authorized to offer a Bachelor of Science degree, which validates the academic quality of the institution.

Executive Director for Marketing, Media and Communications Kim Lessner highlighted that TJC’s distinction as one of the top 150 community colleges in the country by the Aspen Institute, contributes to the focus on academic excellence that students are seeking.

“Students who attend TJC receive instruction from prestigious faculty in state-of-the-art training facilities, and in addition, TJC offers an experience that is much like four-year universities with enhanced social and cultural opportunities – all at a great value,” Lessner said.

“We are happy that more and more parents and students are trusting our faculty and staff to deliver an affordable quality education,” TJC President Dr. Mike Metke said. “Whether they are planning to go on to a four-year university or enter the workforce, TJC graduates are well prepared for their next phase in life.”

TJC offers classes in five locations as well as online, making opportunities for students flexible and more convenient.

“We value our students and communities,” Mejia said. “Because we know that education is key to economic development, regional prosperity and social mobility, we believe it is a great day of celebration.”
