TJC plans 5th annual Arts Festival throughout April

Tyler Junior College has announced its 5th annual Arts Festival, to be held throughout the month of April on the TJC main campus.

The festival is a collaboration of “The Bell Tower Arts Journal,” International Day, Tyler Museum of Art, and the TJC departments of art, music, theater, speech, dance and visual communications.

A new addition to this year’s lineup will be a Street Fair, set from 3 to 9 p.m. Saturday, April 27, in TJC’s Cultural Arts District along Mahon Street. The family-friendly event will feature music and theatrical performances, workshops, dance, art and food. Admission is free.

Student involvement is key to the festival’s success; and each year, a competition is held among TJC students, to create an original Arts Festival logo. This year’s winner was Kacey Isabella Moore, an art major from Yantis.

The festival will offer performances, exhibits, student film screenings, guest speakers, and more at various times and locations across the TJC campus and at the Tyler Museum of Art. All of the events are open to the public, but tickets are required for some events.

“This is our fifth annual, month-long celebration of the TJC Arts Festival and it’s better than ever, thanks to our outstanding faculty and students,” said Dr. Linda Gary, dean of the TJC School of Humanities, Communications and Fine Arts and an Arts Festival organizer.

“Once again, we are partnering with our good friends at the Tyler Museum of Art to provide some remarkable experiences, and KETK is generously helping us to spread the word as our media sponsor.”

Gary said the TJC Arts Festival offers something from each of the areas of TJC’s Cultural Arts District, including musicians, singers, dance, art and a theater production.

A few of the festival’s featured events include:
• Coffee House recitals at noon each Wednesday, at Tyler Museum of Art, featuring a different campus musical group each week
• Silent Film Bash, set 6:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, April 8-12, in Jenkins Hall, Room 1109
• Distinguished Lecture Series speaker Kebharu Smith, federal prosecutor, 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 16, Jean Browne Theatre, in conjunction with TJC’s annual International Day festivities
