TJC President for Branch Locations & District Provost recognized in three consecutive Texas Legislative Sessions

TJC President for Branch Locations & District Provost Dr. Juan E. Mejia was recently recognized by the Texas Legislature for his work in higher education.

He has now been honored during three consecutive Texas Legislative Sessions.

During the 86th Texas Legislative Session, the Honorable Bryan Hughes, member of the Texas Senate and chair for the Senate Administration Committee, introduced Senate Resolution 23 to honor Mejia following Mejia’s recognition by the Texas Association of Community Colleges. Mejia was also recognized through House Resolution 689 during the 84th Texas Legislature Session and Senate Resolution 160 during the 85th Session.

Sen. Hughes, a TJC alumnus, has served the great state of Texas with a strong focus on East Texas, through his role as state representative and now state senator. Hughes is a strong advocate for education and was instrumental in TJC’s advancement to Level II status, which allows the College to award specialized baccalaureate degrees.

Senate Resolution 23, introduced by Sen. Hughes, commended Dr. Mejia for his longstanding service to students and communities throughout Texas, as well as the state-wide recognition he received by the Texas Association of Community Colleges (TACC). Organized in 1947, TACC’s core value is centered on improving educational opportunities within Texas community colleges and builds and maintains relationships with legislators to promote its primary mission of advocacy.

Dr. Mejia expressed sincere appreciation to Sen. Hughes for his care and attention to his constituents, to the members of TACC, to Executive Director Jacob Fraire for the ongoing service on behalf of community colleges, and to TJC Chancellor & CEO Dr. Michael Metke, who has served as a mentor to Mejia.
