The Tyler Junior College presence in Lindale is growing to meet increased demand.
The College has entered into a lease agreement that will provide an additional 2,700 square feet of space for TJC-Lindale, located in the Identity Center, 2808 N. Main St.
The lease agreement was approved by the TJC Board of Trustees on Thursday.
The new space is on the east side of the Identity Center Complex. It will provide three new classrooms and two additional office spaces, said Heather Stokke, TJC-Lindale site coordinator. The College presently operates two classrooms with office space on the north side of the Identity Center. TJC-Lindale is home to a cohort of licensed vocational nursing students and offers core curriculum credit and continuing education courses.
"Our goal is to increase our course offerings so that students can take a full load of classes here in Lindale," Stokke said.
The new space will be ready for Spring 2011 classes.
The College will also offer a Basic Nurses Aid course at the Lindale location, with a new class starting each month from January-April 2011. Basic nurse aide classes will meet Fridays from 4-10 p.m., Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (with 30 min. lunches) and Sundays from 1-5 p.m. Clinicals, at Mineola Community Care Center or Wood Memorial Nursing Home, will be from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. (with 30 min. lunches). The class costs $525.
Fall enrollment at TJC-Lindale grew from 102 in 2009 to 267 this year.
A recent market evaluation study revealed that residents responding to a survey indicated basic core curriculum courses are the most popular among credit students and that current students want more weekday class offerings.
Stokke said recommendations from the study include providing additional testing and advising opportunities, offering a Core Complete Certificate and providing core courses for the LVN to RN transition program.
