Bob Phillips to appear at foundation golf tourney

Bob Phillips, host of the syndicated weekly television series Texas Country Reporter and owner and president of Phillips Productions, Inc., will serve as guest speaker for the Tyler Junior College Foundation Scholarship Golf Tournament on Thursday, Sept. 14, at Eagle’s Bluff Country Club.

Phillips will deliver the lunch address for players and sponsors in the tournament.

In its 19-year history, the tournament’s focus has been to generate money for athletic scholarships at TJC. This year, a community advisory committee worked with the Foundation to broaden the tournament’s impact. Proceeds will now provide much-needed scholarships for all TJC programs, and this year’s goal is $25,000.

For information about playing in the tournament or becoming a sponsor, call the TJC Foundation at 903-510-2382.

The luncheon begins at 11 a.m. with Phillips’ address beginning at 11:30. The six-player teams will commence play with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m.

Phillips started his television career at KDFW-TV (Channel 4) in Dallas. He was a photographer and reporter covering news and politics. The country reporter series began there in 1972 and continued on that station until Phillips moved the program to WFAA-TV (Channel 8) in Dallas in October of 1986. Texas Country Reporter is now seen on 25 television stations throughout Texas and surrounding states and has an average weekly audience of 1.3 million viewers. The program also airs nationally via satellite and cable on RFD-TV.

Phillips is a 1973 graduate of Southern Methodist University. In 1976 he received his master’s degree from SMU. He has been honored for his work from AP, UPI, Press Club of Dallas, Telly Awards, Texas Historical Commission, WorldFest International and the coveted television Emmy® Award. He is a professor of communication at Amberton University.
