Director of Harmony
& Understanding
Angela Smith joined the Tyler Junior College Music faculty in 2001. She is currently the Director of Harmony and Understanding, an elite performance group of auditioned students. She instructs Music Appreciation courses and gives private voice lessons. Smith received her masters and bachelor’s degree in vocal performance from the University of Texas at Tyler. She attended Tyler Junior College where she was a member of Harmony and Understanding and the A Cappella Choir. Her instructors have included Dr. Molly Johnson, Daisy Highfill, Dr. Chad Edwards, and Dr. Cheryl Rogers. In addition to her voice studio at TJC, Smith has maintained a private voice studio since 1998. Her students have placed in UIL All State and Region Choirs and have moved on to successful college careers in music and theatre. Her students have competed in national competitions and participated in theatre workshops in New York and abroad. Smith has worked as a guest director and voice clinician for area schools. Since 2003, she has instructed a summer voice program at Tyler Junior College and has conducted a theatre camp. Mrs. Smith was a member of “Who’s Who Among America’s Junior College Students. She was secretary of Tyler Junior College Phi Theta Kappa honor society. Smith was also a 2007 nominee for the Mattie Alice Scroggin Baker Excellence in Teaching Award.
