Mrs. C. Jeanie Oxler, coloratura soprano, joined the TJC Music faculty in the Fall of 2000. She is Instructor of Voice, Ear Training/Sight Singing and Italian Diction. In addition to her duties at TJC, Mrs. Oxler maintains an active performance, master class and private teaching schedule.
A Texas Native, Jeanie Oxler graduated from Bandera High School with highest honors. She then attended Hardin-Simmons University, graduating Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Music degree in vocal/choral education and receiving all-level certification in music education in Texas. Immediately following her bachelor degree, she began work on her Master of Music in Vocal Performance at Indiana University, completing in the Spring of 2000, specializing in Vocal Pedagogy, Art Song, and Diction. During her time at IU, Oxler studied with the internationally renown Metropolitan Opera Diva, Martina Arroyo, and Alan Bennett, one of the nation’s top tenor soloists.
For ten years, Jeanie Oxler spent her summers as premier vocalist at a vacation resort, performing a variety of styles, including musical theatre, jazz, classical and popular music. She continues to sing in these styles, performing with the Tyler Junior College Jazz Band and directing and playing piano for a youth music ministry team at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Tyler. Mrs. Oxler’s students also perform well in these styles, leading worship at their churches and singing lead roles in musicals at TJC and in the community.
At Hardin-Simmons University, Mrs. Oxler was a member of the Abilene Philharmonic Chorus in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, gave recitals, and began teaching voice through the HSU Community School. She performed the role of Frasquita in Bizet’s Carmen and Queen of the Night in Mozart’s Magic Flute, in HSU’s opera workshop.
Studying pedagogy, art song and diction, Mrs. Oxler was known for her Art Song Recitals at Indiana University, where she was under the direction of Martina Arroyo, Alan Bennett, and renown pianists/coaches Leonard Hokanson and Gary Arvin. Mrs. Oxler has participated in master classes of Martina Arroyo, Alan Bennett, Costanza Cuccaro, James McDonald, and Kathy McNeil, and has taught Pedagogy, Artistry and Art Song Master Classes. She was selected member and section leader for a professional choir, Apollo Chorus, and performed with the Indianapolis Symphony. In the Fall of 1999, Mrs. Oxler was a finalist at the National Association of Teachers of Singing regional convention in Muncie, Indiana, where she received honorable mention.
Performing throughout the community, Oxler is a member, cantor, and soloist in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Choir, where she was featured soloist in What Child is This a Christmas Cantata by John Leavitt. As a former member of the Tyler Chamber Chorale, Mrs. Oxler was soprano soloist in Bach’s Magnificat and other smaller works. Oxler has performed solos with the Marvin Methodist Chancel Choir featuring the Dallas Brass Ensemble, and sang the soprano solos in Canticle of Joy at First United Methodist Church in Gilmer.
Mrs. Oxler has taught private voice lessons for fifteen years, and combines a strong foundation of vocal technique with artistry and musicality in lessons. Weekly performance and pedagogy master classes, studio recitals, opera scenes as well as civic, church and school related performances are offered to her own voice students and other singers in the community, including some high school students and choirs at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and Pollard United Methodist Church. Mrs. Oxler’s students have performed lead roles in: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Wizard of Oz, Footloose, Crazy for You, Kiss Me Kate, Little Abner, Guys and Dolls. Her high school students have received superior ratings at UIL State Solo and Ensemble contest, and her college students are finding much success at their transfer institutions, in both vocal competitions and school performances.
