Mr. Kerry Baham joined the Tyler Junior College music faculty in 1997. He currently instructs sophomore theory, music literature, private lessons in piano, and accompanying.
As a Teaching Fellow, Baham received his master’s degree in piano performance from the University of North Texas. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in the same from Southeastern Louisiana University. Additionally, he received a scholarship to study in Europe, and presented concerts in Vienna and Salzburg at the Hochshule fur Musik and the Mozarteum, respectively. His principal teachers have included David Evenson, Jack Roberts, Paul Posnak, and Nicola Frisardi. He has also performed in masterclasses under the tutelage of such artists as Santiago Rodriguez, Ralph Votapek, Horst Stein, Vladimir Viardo, Grant Johannesen, and Joseph Banowetz. An artist on the Eroica classical recordings label, Baham is currently involved in recording the complete sonatas of Mozart. Additionally, possessing a repertoire of music from Bach to Corigliano, Baham has recorded numerous solo recitals over the past several years. Baham has been featured as a guest artist with the Monroe, Louisiana and Jackson, Mississippi Symphony Orchestras. As a soloist, Mr. Baham has been awarded top prizes in competitions on state, regional, and national levels. Among these are the Collegiate Artist and Wideman International Piano Competitions.
Along with his solo work, Baham has, as an accomplished accompanist, collaborated with winners of the Metropolitan Opera Auditions on concerts in the United States as well as Europe. His accompanying teachers have included such brilliant artists as Harold Heiberg and Robert Evans. Baham has accompanied in numerous studios of highly respected professors, including the following: Cody Garner, Steven Farish, Philip Lewis, Harold Heiberg, Scharmel Schrock, Jeanine Crader, Harriet Vogt, Patty Johnstone, Ed Baird, and Franklin Summers, to name a few. In addition to performance awards, Mr. Baham has also garnered academic awards, among which is his being named a Doctoral Scholar at the University of North Texas.
As a teacher, Baham has greatly enjoyed the successes of his students. Upon leaving Tyler Junior College, many have received scholarships at such institutions as the Royal Academy of Music in London, the prestigious college of music at the University of North Texas, the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Texas at Arlington, and Stephen F. Austin State University. Not content to limit his teaching to college students, Baham teaches pre-college age children as well. Many of these students have achieved performance honors at local and state competitions.
Currently, Baham is preparing a series of all Chopin recitals for concerts at universities across the south in celebration of the composer’s 200th birthday. Baham’s professional affiliations include the Texas Music Teachers’ Association, the Music Teachers’ National Association, the American Liszt Society, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.
