Vaughn Electronic Research Center
Policies and Procedures
A current TJC student or
faculty/staff ID must be presented each time to
use VERC
equipment.
If a student’s ID card has
been retained at the Circulation Desk when
checking out
reserve materials, a Library Circulation ID will be given
that
student. With this ID, a student does not have to present
his/her ID.
This card is only valid for the date on the card and the
lab assistant
will keep the card when the student leaves.
Minimum age for unsupervised
non-students is 16 years of age. A parent
or guardian
MUST accompany all other children. A parent
or guardian
whose child
is disturbing others – either by crying or fussing or by
running loose
– will be asked to leave.
Students must check-in at the
front desk by presenting a valid ID
(see
Vaughn Library Policies and Procedures – Circulation Desk
for what
constitutes a valid ID). VERC users may be asked to
sign-in on a
form provided by the library.
Everyone must sign in when
they come to the lab. This includes family
and/or
friends. Those working on group projects will each be assigned
a computer
station.
Each patron, if using VERC
for any type of class work, must provide the lab
assistant
with the course name and number (ENGL. 1302), instructor’s
name, and
program/software they plan on using each visit. This is for
statistical
purposes only.
Please note that the lab
assistant’s primary job is to check students into
and out of
VERC. If there are students waiting to be checked in or out,
the lab
assistant will not be able to assist you at the computers.
Users will be assigned to a
particular computer. The user MUST use the
assigned
computer. Those desiring to move to another computer must
check with a
lab assistant BEFORE making such a move.
All open computer labs on campus have a
Respect shall be shown the
lab assistants and others using the lab. Please
remember that
the lab assistants do not make the rules; they are,
however,
expected to enforce them.
Offensive language is not
permitted.
Lewd, offensive,
inappropriate, or pornographic material (as determined by
the lab
manager and/or Director of Library Services) is not permitted in
VERC, whether
it is brought in by the student or accessed from the
Internet
either as a website or as part of an email. Failure to abide by
this policy
strictly results in the student being banned from VERC as
well as other
open computer labs on campus. A report will be filed with
Campus Safety
and the user will be required to meet with the Director of
Student
Services pending final determination for re-entry to VERC.
Food and drinks are not
allowed in VERC. Any food or drink
containers left
outside the
lab unattended may by thrown away. You are responsible for
any damage to
library materials or equipment due to your neglect.
When VERC is busy, a time
limit of two hours will be enforced. This is a priority
list of
those patrons who would be asked to leave first:
1) Non-students (community users);
2) Students who have signed in to do “Personal” work;
3) Students who have been in VERC more than two hours;
4) Students using email, even if they are signed in under a class.
Students who are asked to surrender their computer for any of the afore-
mentioned
reasons will have five (5) minutes to save their work and check
out of VERC.
All patrons are responsible
for cleaning up their work area before checking out.
Do not leave
trash for the next patron to clean.
Students must bring their own
supplies to the lab. VERC only supplies a hole
punch, a
stapler, and an electric pencil sharpener.
Noise/talking is to be kept
at a minimum to ensure a pleasant environment
for all VERC
patrons.
Students must wear headphones
while listening to CD-ROM programs or
Internet
information that has audio/sound recordings included.
Copying any software in the
lab is strictly forbidden. Most software is
copyright
protected. Criminal charges and/or fines are possible if one is
caught
copying a program.
Only software that is legally
purchased and/or licensed by TJC will be
installed on
the computers/networks of VERC. Students may NOT install
software at
any time. Failure to comply will result in loss of lab privileges.
The VERC phones are for staff
use only. There is a payphone on the first floor
between the
inner and outer front doors of the library.
This computer lab is for
research only. Chat rooms – other than those required
by Internet
classes – is NOT allowed.
No prints of personal email
will be allowed. Note: Lab assistants do check the
printouts and
will throw away personal prints unless they are class related.
The 10 page
per day limit is enforced.
TJC students currently
enrolled will have a TJC Student E-mail account. Support
is provided
for TJC accounts only. All other emails are at your own risk.
Students are expected to
abide by all policies in the TJC Student Handbook when
they are on
campus.
Students violating any of the
above policies will be issued a warning for the first
offense.
Upon a second offense, the student will be required to meet with
the VERC
manager before being allowed to re-enter the lab. Upon a third
offense, the
student may be reported to Campus Safety and/or the Director
of Student
Services for disciplinary action. Viewing or relaying
pornographic,
lewd, offensive, or inappropriate materials is cause for
immediate
notification of Campus Safety.
Questions and comments
regarding the VERC policies or other issues should be
directed to
the VERC lab manager in writing (email: npoo@tjc.edu
