FOREIGN LANGUAGE PROGRAM
TYLER JUNIOR COLLEGE

You make your first steps at Tyler Junior College in the Modern Language Program.

A number of careers are open to you because you have background in culture and skill in communicating in another language.

Elementary School Teachers who teach math, science, and English to non-English speaking Hispanic children. This is bi-lingual education. The student should seek counseling from his/her senior college as degree requirements will vary.

Criminal Justice majors find another language (specifically Spanish) indispensable on the job-from traffic violations to in-jail interpretation.

Court Interpreter at all levels of the judicial system.
*simultaneous translating/intepreting in court
*private consulting for written technical translation
*oral interpretation (e.g. depositions).

Job Outlook is positive always. With the increase of the Hispanic population, the Spanish speaking population is due to be the largest minority in Texas by the year 2012. There will be no majority.

Starting Salaries vary but most school districts start their bilingual educators/foreign language teachers at $27,000/year, plus $1,500 stipend at Tyler ISD. Oral interpretation and written translation ranges from $25/hour to $50/hour.

English majors, Pre-law majors, et. al., are normally required to have 4 college semesters of a foreign lauguage. Start your foreign language as a freshman (rather than having to take your last 2 semesters at a large senior college) and check with the senior college that you plan to attend for specific degree requirements.
