Harmony & Understanding
Harmony & Understanding has been entertaining audiences throughout the East Texas regional area and beyond since 1970 with their high powered and energy driven singing and dancing. Harmony & Understanding was created in the fall of 1970 as a "pop" singing group made up of students who were members of TJC's concert choir, the "Singing Apaches". Mrs. Marilyn Brosang, founding Director, encouraged the students to express themselves through their singing and with the students' help, named the group Harmony & Understanding in keeping with the hit song of 1969 "Aquarius" made famous by the Fifth Dimension.
The group began to perform everywhere they had the opportunity both on- and off-campus. Their popularity spread quickly and made great strides as their new director Mr. J.W. Johnson led them into the next 2 decades. They became known for lively, modern day arrangements of repertoire ranging from standard classic-pop and Broadway music to modern day hits. Performances were accompanied by a student led combo of keyboard, bass and drums. H&U’s close relationship with the TJC Apache Belles and Apache Band allowed for many opportunities to travel and perform for audiences at Dallas Cowboys halftime shows, the State Fair of Texas, Miss Texas Pageant, July 4th celebrations at the Cotton Bowl, Texas Breakfast Club in Washington, D.C., Nice, France – Carnival Celebration, Yachiyo, Japan - Sister City Concert, London Millennium Concerts and Parade, and U.S. Military Bases in Hawaii and Germany. Other venues have included the Miss Texas Pageant, KLTV Celebrity Telethon, Lawrence Welk Theatre – Branson, MO and the Liberty Theatre in Tyler. They have met and entertained with celebrities like comedian Bob Hope, actress Sandy Duncan, song-writer Will Jennings and actor-film producer Ron Howard.
Today Harmony & Understanding carries on the tradition as goodwill ambassadors for the college in local and regional performance venues. They also present the annual Pops Concert with the TJC Jazz Ensemble, directed by Heather Mensch, in the fall semester. The Pops concert got its start in 1978 along with their annual spring show "Broadway Blast".
