The Honors Experience

Honors Academic Tracks

Because the Honors Program admits a large group of students with diverse needs, two Honors tracks are offered. Both Honors tracks fulfill the Honors Program graduation requirements. Incoming students select the track that best suits their needs and academic and career goals.

Honors Participant

This track is designed to suit the needs of freshmen with 24+ dual credit hours, students entering professional or technical programs, and/or TJC students admitted to the Honors Program after their freshmen year. This track should be completed within one academic year.

Students will complete a minimum of 11 hours of Honors coursework which must include:

  • Freshman Honors Colloquium, PHIL2289
  • Honors Learning Framework, EDUC 1300
  • Two Honors elective courses (any Honors level courses)

Honors Program Scholar with Distinction

Students who complete this track will have "Honors Program Scholar with Distinction" designated on their transcript. 

This two-year track is designed for highly motivated students who wish to transfer to competitive 4-year institutions and/or complete their bachelor's degree within other Honors Colleges.  This longer mor rigorous program suits the preparatory needs of students who wish to excel as undergraduates in order to be competitive applicants in seeking scholarships, fellowships, or advanced degrees. 

Students will complete a minimum of 22 hours of Honors coursework which must include the following:

  • Freshman Honors Colloquium, PHIL2289
  • Honors Learning Framework, EDUC 1300
  • Honors Research Capstone, SOCI 2289
  • One Honors course from EACH of the following subject areas*:
  1. English/Humanities: ENGL 1301, ENGL 1302, ENGL 2332, ENGL 2333, HUMA 1301
  2. Fine Arts: ARTS 1301, DRAM 1310, ENGL 2307 
  3. Social and Behavioral Sciences: SOCI 1301, PSYC 2301 
  4. History/Government: HIST 1301, HIST 1302, GOVT 2305, GOVT 2306 
  5. Natural Sciences/Mathematics: BIOL 1406, BIOL 1407, GEOL 1404, PHYS 1402, PHYS 1405, MATH 1314, MATH  1342, MATH 2413 
  6. One Honors elective highly recommended: COMM 1307, COSC 1301, PHIL 1301, SPAN 1411, SPAN 1412, SPCH 1321

*In the case that a student has already fulfilled the Core requirement in any of these areas, an additional elective or honors contract in the field of study may be substituted.
