Business vs. Business Management Degrees

Students are strongly encouraged to think carefully about career flexibility, personal situations and the student’s degree of certainty about academic majors when choosing between Business (field of study) and Business Management degree plans.

Business

  • Associate in Arts (AA) degree, Field of Study in Business
  • Degree Plan for Transfer into the College of Business. Provides freshman and sophomore-level coursework for those students who plan to transfer to a 4-year college or university and complete a bachelor’s degree in a particular area of business. Includes all core curriculum requirements as well as the freshman and sophomore-level business specific prerequisite courses.
Important: It is at the junior level that you choose a specific major in Business. Your major at your senior school may be Finance, Accounting, Marketing, or Management resulting in a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree.

Business Management

  • Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree
  • Degree Plan for those students who primarily want to obtain job skills for immediate employment or employment advancement potential. Two-year program that consists mainly of business specific courses.
  • An AAS degree in Business Management is not the traditional transfer degree program leading to a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA). However, many four-year universities offer the Bachelor in Applied Arts and Science (BAAS), and the Business Management degree will transfer into that bachelor’s degree. Locally, University of Texas at Tyler offers a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Human Resource Development.
