General Information Regarding the HITT Program

Applying to the Program

The HIT Program at TJC is a program that requires going through an application process. The student can download the application from the TJC website and email the Program Coordinator, Nicole Wright (nwri@tjc.edu) for a complete packet.

A student can only apply in the Spring semester, deadline at the end of May. Will accept late applications depending on availability.

If wanting to transfer from another CAHIIM Accredited HIT Program please contact the Program Coordinator upon interest of transferring to the program. TJC HIT Program does require a letter of good standing from the previous HIT Program in order to transfer to the program at TJC.

Students may stretch the program to three years.

A student must be TSI complete in Reading and Writing to apply to the program. The student can be working on the Math and must complete the Math in order to take BIOL 2402.

If a student is not TSI complete in Math by the time the student enters the program the student must take the math in the fall semester.

The Health Information Technology Program does require the students to attend clinical sites (health care facilities).

You are responsible for traveling to sites for these rotations. Please be aware that you will be required to travel outside of the East Texas area for your site visits. We use sites in the northeast Texas region as well as north Louisiana.

For students not living in the East Texas area, the clinical coordinator relies on the student to assist the coordinator in locating sites in your area for clinical rotations.

You may refer to the Cost and Fees section to see some of the costs incurred with the clinical rotations.

Information required for the clinical rotations

A student must have the following completed before participating in the clinical rotations at the healthcare facilities:

Background Check—must be clear

Drug Screen—must be clear

Physical Exam

TB Skin Test—must be negative

Provide immunization records

Proof of hepatitis B series

Proof of current flu vaccination

Textbooks

The HIT Program requires that the students purchase the following textbooks upon entry into the program. These two textbooks are used throughout the duration of the program several of our programs.

Case Studies in Health Information Management by McCuen, Sayles, and Schnering (Used this last semester) 2nd Edition

AHIMA Publishing

ISBN: 9781133602682

Health Information Management Technology: An Applied Approach by Sayles (Used this semester should have already) 4th Edition

AHIMA Publishing

ISBN: 9781584263527

The name of the textbooks required for courses are listed in the online syllabus that can be accessed at www.tjc.edu.

The faculty highly encourage you NOT to sell any of your HIT textbooks. These are wonderful reference books as you prepare for the RHIT exam.

Program Orientation

There is a campus program orientation for students within a three hour radius. If you are outside of a three hour radius then you are required to complete the orientation online.
