Course Credit and Transfer

COURSE CREDIT FOR CERTIFIED CODING SPECIALIST CREDENTIAL (CCS)

It is the policy of the Tyler Junior College Health Information Technology Program that students who have passed the Certified Coding Specialist examination given by AHIMA will receive credit for the following Health Information Technology Program courses.

  • HITT 1305 Medical Terminology I
  • HITT 1303 Medical Terminology II
  • BIOL 2401 Anatomy and Physiology I
  • BIOL 2402 Anatomy and Physiology II
  • HPRS 2301 Pathophysiology
  • HITT 1341 Coding and Classification Systems
  • HITT 2335 Coding and Reimbursement Methodologies
  • HITT 2346 Advanced Medical Coding

COURSE CREDIT FOR CERTIFIED PROCEDURAL CODER CREDENTIAL (CPC)

It is the policy of the Tyler Junior College Health Information Technology Program that students who have passed the Certified Procedural Coder examination given by AACP will receive credit for the following course.

POFM 1300 Medical Coding Basics

COURSE CREDIT FOR CERTIFIED PROCEDURAL CODER – HOSPITAL CREDENTIAL (CPC-H)

It is the policy of the Tyler Junior College Health Information Technology Program that students who have passed the Certified Procedural Coder – Hospital examination given by AACP will receive credit for the following course.

  • HITT 1305 Medical Terminology I
  • HITT 1303 Medical Terminology II
  • POFM 1300 Medical Coding Basics

COURSE TRANSFER POLICIES

  1. HIT program courses must meet the following requirements before transfer will occur:
    • Transferring courses must be from a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management (CAHIIM).
    • Transferring courses must have comparable course objectives to equivalent TJC Health Information Technology courses.
    • Transferring courses must have a minimum course grade of “B”.
  2. General courses within the HIT program must be completed with a “C” or better and be equivalent to current Tyler Junior College courses as proven by a TJC Degree Audit done through the Registrar’s Office.

CREDIT BY EXAMINATION OR WORK EXPERIENCE

  1. There will be no credit by examination opportunities for HIT program courses.
  2. Credit by examination for general courses may be given depending upon test     
  3. There will be no credit for work experience given for HIT program courses or general courses.

COURSE CREDIT TIME LIMITS

  1. The following courses must be taken within 5 years of acceptance into the Health Information Technology Program.
    • COSC 1301 Introduction to Computing
    • All HIT Program Courses that are to be transferred into Tyler Junior College
    • HITT1305 and HITT1303 Medical Terminology I and II
  2. The following courses must be taken within 7 years of acceptance into the Health
    • Information Technology Program.
    • BIOL 2401 and BIOL 2402 Anatomy and Physiology I and II
    • If the time limit has lapsed for these courses, BIOL 2404 Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology (or it’s equivalent at another college) may be taken as a refresher course to fulfill the time limit requirements.
  3. All other general courses will have no time limit.
