Forensics Tournaments and Awards 2010-2012

Academic Year Fall 2011-Spring 2012

Bayou City Swing Tournaments, October 22 - 23, 2011
TJC’s Speech and Debate attended the Bayou City Swing tournaments in Houston. There were 14 universities in attendance from two states. Before I tell you how our current students did at these tournaments, I want to brag about our former students! Many of you will remember Jawoine Hawkins (now at Texas State Univ.), Austin Witherspoon, Alex Hatoum and Daniel Hatoum (all three competing for the University of Texas at Austin.) These students are continuing to excel in their communication skills and were in multiple finals this weekend. And at UT Tyler, former students, Alex Warren and Travis Smith are competing in debate on the national circuit. If you saw the article in the Tyler paper, they are currently the number one rated team in the country! Lots to be proud about with our current and former students!  Here are the results from the Bayou tournament:

We traveled to San Marcos for the Hill Country Swing Tournaments hosted by Texas State University and the University of Texas at Austin. Seventeen schools attended, including seven of the top 20 universities in the country in Speech competition! (In fact, I believe there were more out of state schools than Texas ones). It was an awesome experience to see the best of the best compete. We were very proud of De'Anthony Goodson, who made Semi-Finals in Prose Interpretation.

Academic Year Fall 2010-Spring 2011

Phi Rho Pi Nationals, April 2011:
Speech Team Succeeds at Nationals!

TJC Speech and Debate team was in Greenwich, Connecticut at the Phi Rho Pi national tournament for community colleges. We had seven students qualify for this difficult tournament. Over 500 students from across the country competed representing over 50 colleges. I am excited to share how well we did:

  • Lewis Sharp - GOLD in Parliamentary Debate w/ his hybrid partner from Tarrant County NEt
  • Josh Equia - SILVER in Prose Interpretation
  • Megan Bryant - BRONZE in Program Oral Interpretation
  • Jawoine Hawkins - BRONZE in Prose Interpretation
  • Jawoine Hawkins - BRONZE in Dramatic Interpretation
  • TJC won a BRONZE in Debate Sweepstakes.

American Forensic Association National Tournament, April 2011:
Jawoine Hawkins represented Tyler Junior College at the American Forensic Association's national tournament held at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. This is the tournament for universities and colleges. Jawoine ended up ranked 26th in the nation in Dramatic Interpretation. More remarkably, with a team of only one student, TJC was the 4th Place Community College at the tournament, missing third place by only one point! (Students earn points by their rankings in all of their rounds.) Quite an accomplishment for one student!
