Apache Access and Online Course FAQs

Note: If you use Hughes.Net, Wild Blue or other satellite based Internet Service providers, you will need to ask them to disable the web accelerator on your account.


What is the correct way to get into Apache Access?

Use the ENTIRE “A” number (example: A00123456). The first time you log in, your password the first time you log in will include "TJC" before your date of birth in MMDDYY (ex. "TJC062175"). You will be informed that your password has expired and you will need to make a new password at that time.


What browsers are recommended for use with Apache Access?

We recommend Internet Explorer 8 or FireFox 3.6.25 for Apache Access and Canvas. We recommend Chrome for Canvas, Gmail, and the Google application links at the top of your Apache Access home page.


Why do some pages work and others not work in Apache Access?

Those pages are probably JAVA enabled. Please make sure you are running Java 6 update 26. If you are not and have an older version, you can upgrade for free at http://www.oldapps.com/java.php?old_java=77. Click on the file name and not on the “download” buttons. Then go to the Java Control Panel and adjust the settings as follows:

If your version is newer, you will need to go to the control panel and uninstall JAVA, then follow the instructions above to install version 6 update 26.


Why do I keep getting booted out of Apache Access?

Your session will automatically timeout after one hour of inactivity.

Apache Access doesn’t like toolbars. Remove all toolbars from your browser as follows: in your browser you can click Tools | Manage Add-ons, and search through the list to find anything that has “toolbar” in its name, whether it be a toolbar itself or a toolbar helper, click on it, then click Disable. Do this for each and every toolbar. Close your browser and reopen it. You should be able to log in.


When I try to get to my on-line course I get an error message:

I am being asked for a user ID and PIN after I have already logged into Apache Access.

First, delete your browser history. Press Ctrl + Shift + Del, and remove everything from the beginning of time. Close out all of your windows and try again.

How do I access my VCT class?

If you have a Student ID, use your “A” number and password to get into Apache Access, then go to the quicklinks. If you do not have an “A” number, go to https://tjc.instructure.com/login?canvas_login=1  and click Log In, The User Name is your initials followed by the last four digits of the phone number you registered with. The password is tylerjc.


My instructor’s PowerPoints won’t open.

Open Adobe Reader, Go to Edit, then down to Preferences. In the list on the left, select Internet, then UNCHECK Display in Browser. Save and exit Adobe, then try to view the PowerPoint again.


I can log into Apache Access, but my online course won’t open.

Make sure you are using Google Chrome or FireFox for your Canvas online courses.
