Tyler Junior College continues to make a difference by honoring its three promises of a quality education, a vibrant student life and community service. For 26 years, the TJC Foundation golf tournament has helped the College honor those promises by providing greatly-needed scholarships. Through the continuing generosity of alumni and friends, TJC is benefitting from another successful tournament.
The 2013 Azalea Orthopedics Scholarship Golf Tournament, held on Thursday, September 5th at Hollytree Country Club, was a triumph for education. It was made possible by many individuals and businesses dedicated to making a difference for TJC and the local community.
To all of our sponsors, thank you! Your generosity ensures that deserving East Texas students can pursue a higher education founded in the rich traditions of Tyler Junior College.
Featured Past Recipients - Kristy Howell & Rocky Coss
Kristy Howell received her Associate of Arts degree in general studies in May 2009. She was accepted to TJC’s highly competitive dental hygiene program and received her Associate of Applied Science degree in May 2011. For the past two years, she has been employed as a dental hygienist with the Bethesda Health Clinic.
“TJC gave me the ability to obtain a life changing career that I love,” she said of her TJC experience. Kristy received the TJC Foundation Golf Tournament Scholarship during her second year in the dental hygiene program.
“It came at the perfect time,” she said. “I was not able to work while in the program, so funds were limited.”
Kristy and her husband Richard live in Tyler and have two daughters, Breanna and Abby.
Rocky Coss graduated from TJC in December 2010 with an Associate of Applied Science degree in heating, air conditioning and refrigeration. He also completed two Certificates of Proficiency, one in heating, air conditioning and refrigeration and the other in commercial refrigeration.
He has been employed with Sears for seven years. After completing his education at TJC, he was promoted from technician to trainer and oversees a district of 278 technicians.
He remembers how his TJC instructors embraced him and wanted to make sure that he was successful, and he still keeps in touch with many of them today.
“I’m very grateful to those who make scholarships possible,” he said.
“It was very encouraging and gave me the added determination to meet my goal and complete my associate’s degree.”
Rocky and his wife Jennifer live in Van and have three daughters, Hannah, Hope and Jessamyn.
