Team Tryout Information

***** ATTENTION ATTENTION ATTENTION ***** Due to restructuring we have decided to move tryouts to 09 JULY-10 JULY!!!! An email will be sent out today, please let anyone you know who wishes to tryout that the date has changed. Thank you. If you or someone you know would like to attend Tyler Junior College and tryout for Apache Cheer, please visit our Recruit Info page and submit the information form. We will add you to our recruit list and keep you updated on everything that's going on with the Team as well as updates on event dates and reminders. Tryouts will be held in the OHPE Gentry Gym located at 1205 S Palmer, Tyler, TX 75711.

09 Saturday: 9:00 am until we finish clinic and practice

10 Sunday: 8:30-10:00 am Registration, 10:00 am until we finish tryout and 1st team practices. (if you are a video tryout and make the team you are excused from this practice)

Tryout Requirements

Large Coed/ Small Coed cheer squad

Single base coed flying experience is preferred and we highly suggest that all ladies wanting to try out for a flier position be able to co-ed stunt already. Men wanting to tryout will also need to have coed stunt experience. All trying out will need to have tumbling experience. Please keep in mind we are a very competitive team and will have more people trying out than we can take so every skill you can master will greatly increase your chances. Group stunting and flying experience is preferred as well as tumbling experience. Again, please keep in mind that this team will be a very competitive team and more people will tryout than we can take so every skill counts! 

Cost and Paperwork

  • Cost for tryouts is $40.00 and may be cash/ personal check/ money order. Receipts will be given for all payments.
  • All registration paperwork will be provided during Sunday morning registration.
  • We need proof of your acceptance to TJC at the time of tryouts. Please bring a print out of your acceptance.
  • **NEW THIS YEAR** All transfers must provide a letter of recommendation from their previous school coach.
  • **NEW THIS YEAR** Everyone needs to bring a head shot to attach to your tryout application. These will not be returned to you so please make sure they are copies we can keep.

What to Wear

Females

  • Black spandex shorts (may wear black running shorts over spandex)
  • Black sports bra
  • White t-shirt
  • White cheer shoes and socks
  • Hair all up in a pony tail out of your face with a bump/ braid/ twist and a bow
  • Collegiate cheer make-up; earth tones for eyes, minimal eye liner, red lips, and blush

Males

  • Black shorts
  • White t-shirt
  • White cheer shoes and socks
  • Need to be well groomed, hair our of your face, neatly trimmed facial hair.

** ABSOLUTELY NO JEWELRY is permitted on the mat during practice and tryouts**

Team Skills

Females: Positions available - Flyers - Bases - Tumblers

Weight Limit

  • Females trying out for Large Coed over 115 lbs will be trying out for a tumbling position. Layouts and above are necessary and this will also be a position for basketing and pyramids.
  • Females trying out for Small Coed over 115 lbs will be trying out for basing and tumbling positions.
  • Will be weighed in at tryouts under supervision of female coach and trainer. (Please note that this information will be used for determining positions and for health tracking with our strength coach. Males will be weighed in as well) 

Stunts

  • Large Coed - Toss Target (Awesome preferred)
  • Heel Stretch full/ double down
  • One optional stunt with a scale full/ double down.
  • Small Coed - Toss Hands Coed
  • 1 foot load in to Target (toss Target preferred)
  • 1 foot load in Heel Stretch full/ double down
  • One optional stunt with a Scale full/ double down.

Tumbling

  • Standing single skill - back handspring or better (back tuck/ full)
  • Cartwheel back handspring or better (back tuck/ full)
  • Long standing skill - 2 back handsprings or better (handspring back tuck/ full)
  • Running tumbling - requires a minimum of a back tuck or better. Remember, we are competitive, the more difficult a skill you have mastered the better. 

Jumps

  • Toe back handspring or better (back tuck/ full)
  • Hurdler-Pike-Toe 2 back handsprings or better (handspring back tuck/ full)

Males: Positions available - Stunters - Bases - Tumblers

Specialty

  • Large Coed - May tryout for a specialty position in tumbling or stunting. Tumblers will complete a toss hands and three specialty passes in place of stunts.
  • Small Coed - Must stunt and tumble 
  • Will be weighed in under the supervision of male coach and trainer. (This information will be used for health tracking with our strength coach)

Video Tryout Requirements

For those of you who may not be able to attend live tryouts, we will be accepting video tryouts. The deadline for video tryouts and tryout fee ($40) will be Friday 27 May, 2016. When choosing the skills you would like to showcase for your video please follow the team skill guidelines for the team(s) that you wish to tryout for. Have fun and do your best! At the beginning of your skills video, please include a 1 minute quick bio of yourself. We want to know more about you than what you can do! Talk about your experiences with cheer, talk about goals with cheer at TJC and any desires for cheer at the university level. Sell yourself and smile!
