Tyler Area Business Incubator
Tyler Area Business Incubator
Helping businesses get a good start.
The Tyler Area Business Incubator (TABI) is the creation of a consortium including Tyler Junior College, the City of Tyler, and the Economic Development Council, all united to make Tyler a center for biotechnology, medical and surgical technology, and other high-tech innovation.
There are three major hospitals in the immediate area. The city (population approximately 100,000) and surrounding communities have focused on growing health-related industries for over two decades.
TABI, operating self-sufficiently since 1999, has made a significant contribution to this growth. This incubator encourages the development of technology-based products and services which broaden the economic base of the area served by the college. Thirteen to sixteen client businesses operate here throughout the year.
New and expanding businesses are strengthened by support options offered here, such as employee training and free business counseling through the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) and the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE).
Some notably successful companies have been born out of this incubator. The employees of the three top graduate companies number approximately 600 to 700 (some seasonal). A combined total revenue of over $35 million has been generated annually into the community by these three companies. TABI has received three National Business Incubator Association (NBIA) Outstanding Incubator Graduate Awards: The first in 2007 for a company specializing in pediatric home care; the second in 2010 for a durable medical equipment business; and the third in 2013 for a provider of fiber optic and electrical services in the renewable energy industry. Almost all of the businesses graduated from TABI keep in close contact with the incubator to continue the beneficial relationship.
The incubator director is active in the business network of the community. He often attends meetings of the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce and Hispanic Chamber, plus other social events, to let the community know about the incubator. He is an NBIA-certified incubator manager.
The Tyler Area Business incubator offers even more:
- Immediate access to technical training at the Tyler Junior College West Campus, where the incubator is located
- Support from the Small Business Development Center, also located at RTDC
