1301 Orientation
WELCOME TO THE WORLD
OF THE ON-LINE CLASSROOM
This is your orientation class conducted
completely on-line (you do not need to attend an orientation on campus).
Like any other class, there are so many things to
go over. Right now our goal is to get started as quickly and easily as
possible.
BCIS1301 Microcomputer Applications consist of two
parts Lecture and Lab.
You may have a lecture instructor and a lab instructor.
When logging on to WebCT you will see your Lecture classroom and your
Lab classroom.
You may have one instructor for both lecture and lab.
If you have one instructor you will only have one WebCT classroom that
will contain a
Lecture HomePage and a Lab HomePage.
The lecture instructor records the grade for the course.
The lab instructor provides the lecture instructor with the lab grades
for the semester.
Syllabus:
The course syllabus is located in your Webct
classroom in the BCIS1301 – Microcomputer Applications
course under “Course
Information”. The syllabus is required
reading and must be one of the first things you do. Be sure to
read this over carefully and ask questions about what you do not understand.
Lecture TimeLine Schedule:
This is a week by week
outline of everything you will be doing all semester.
The TimeLine is posted under “Course Information” after you
enter your course on WebCT.
The TimeLine gives you your current reading assignment
for that week (equivalent to a classroom lecture).
- Exam weeks are also shown here.
- Be sure to read this over carefully
and ask questions about what you do not understand.
- All due dates and
test dates are listed in the TimeLine and posted on the Calendar.
Lab
TimeLine Schedule:
This is a week by week outline of everything
you will be doing all semester.
- The TimeLine is posted under “Important
Information” after
you enter your course on WebCT.
- Exam weeks are also shown here.
- All due dates of assignments and exams
are listed in the TimeLine and posted on the Calendar.
- Be sure to
read this over carefully and ask questions about what you do not
understand.
Announcements:
Check the Bulletin Board weekly for
Participation/Attendance assignment. Your instructor will email you additional
information throughout
the course or post information on the Bulletin Board.
Grade Info:
The course grade will consist of both
lecture and lab assignments, lecture tests and lab tests, and a lab project.
Details for the course
grade are in the syllabus.
A grade book is available in your WebCT classroom
for your viewing.
Grades will be sent by email ONLY if you request the
grade be sent to you. Without an email request for each grade they will
not be sent. The “Privacy
Act” prohibits the sending of this type of information unless specifically
requested by the individual.
WebCT:
This area is available for additional learning
opportunities.
- It also hosts a discussion forum for our class under the
Bulletins icon for Lecture and Message icon for lab. Feel free to join
in any discussion
listed there.
- The Bulletin Board is a great way to get help from each other concerning
quizzes, homework and lab assignments.
- Your instructor will be monitoring the Bulletin Board area, and will
post answers to any questions that students submit.
- All email messages and homework assignments
will be sent to you instructor by accessing the Webct email facilities
and selecting your Instructor’s
name (always at the top) and then composing the text of the message.
The student guide to Webct should be used to learn how to use the
email facilities and Bulletin Board.
Important
Note:
Remember that the TimeLine(s) instructions
give a specific day and time of the week when homework is due to the
instructor electronically.
If homework is returned to you for reformatting etc., you still have
to meet this time deadline for homework submission. Please
keep that in mind.
Be sure to allow sufficient time for the email to
reach the instructor as well. Email is
NOT instantaneous! This
means you CANNOT send
your homework email 10 or 15 minutes before the deadline and expect it
to arrive on time.
Since no homework will be accepted
late, anything
received after the deadline for that week will be given a grade of zero
(0). NO EXCEPTIONS.
The homework deadline is 8AM CST on Tuesday of the
week due. These dates are posted on the weekly schedule in the TimeLine(s).
Specific information about exams, exam reviews, and
grading will be detailed in separate email messages as needed.
If you are not very familiar with email and attachments
(sending, receiving, & saving)
then it is suggested that you get with someone immediately who can
fill you in on how to do this.
You also need to be current in knowing how to work
with files on your system. Specifically, you need to know how to find,
move, copy, and
rename files.
This is a new experience for most of you, but
we you can have some fun while we take on the traditional classroom in
a new
environment
-- Cyberspace.
