Congratulations and welcome to the
Tyler Junior College Apache Band!

We are excited about this coming year and hope that you are as well. You have helped us increase the band size to over 190 this coming fall. With the added the numbers, the excitement is building for a very successful year. Please read the following sections of this letter, so that you can have all your questions answered about how we get started this summer and what you need to plan for in order for the upcoming semester to be successful.

Calendar:

We have enclosed a tentative schedule for the fall semester. The time for each football game is NOT included, as it may change up until the start of school. For now, assume that you need the whole day reserved for the game, because we rehearse for all home games on Saturday mornings at Rose Stadium from 9-11am. The games are usually in the evenings around 6pm, but some games are afternoon games that may start at another time. Do not plan to work on the day of an away game, as we will spend much of our time on those days traveling back and forth to the game. Please mark all performance dates on your calendar and please make your employers aware of these dates so that no scheduling conflicts occur. If you are on a scholarship, you are being paid to be here, so treat marching band and the schedules that are posted as a job. We also highly suggest each incoming band student carry a date book or personal planner, so that they can coordinate and keep track of rehearsals, performances, work schedules, tests, and homework. To be successful in life, as well as college, you must constantly stay organized.

Tuition and Scholarships:

Our apologies for the mass confusion about how much money you receive depending on which ensembles you enroll in. Just as a reminder, we may have to adjust your scholarship amounts based on how the auditions turn out. If you do not make an ensemble we originally paid you for in your scholarship agreement, then we will adjust your scholarship minus the amount for that ensemble. You are still guaranteed the basic credit amount of $577 for in-district and $889 for out of district and the only class required for this amount is marching band. We figured amounts earlier in the audition process for these ensembles and then we had such a large influx of students that we found it necessary to audition for the extra ensembles. This adjustment may only occur for a few people, but we wanted to make you aware of the situation so you did not receive any surprises before school starts. Again, our apologies for the confusion.

Our original offering of twelve credits and the fee for marching band was based on the numbers we received from the financial aide office and we were told that these numbers would hold for this coming fall. However, they did not. We were notified at the end of May that the Board has indeed raised tuition for this coming fall. We wish we could make adjustments in the scholarships to allow for this, but we cannot. So, another warning for you when you register for classes-you may have a balance to pay when you register for 12 credits. Sorry for the inconvenience.

PLEASE TAKE NOTE:

If a scholarship recipient does not report for band camp, their scholarship will be given to those students on the waiting list who do report for band camp.

Orientation-Freshman only:

If you have not signed up for orientation as an incoming freshman, please do so. The dates for each session are included in a mailer that you should receive from the Admissions office here at TJC. If you have not received any information regarding orientation, please call the Admissions office at 903-510-2523 or 1-800-687-5680, ext. 2523 for more information or check the TJC website. We highly recommend attending an orientation session, because you receive a college Psychology credit for attending, and if you do not attend, they require all freshmen to take a Psychology credit in the fall. So, two days of orientation will save you time and money in the long run. Just be careful to not schedule orientation over the summer band dates (particularly the last session on August 5 & 6 conflicts with the first day of summer band activities for incoming freshman) and percussionists, be careful not to schedule orientation during your camp dates (pit-July 5-9 & drumline- July 19-23).

All Freshman Music Majors need to be advised by Mrs. Mensch before you register for classes at orientation. Call the band hall and schedule a time to visit with her.

Auditions-All Students:

Enclosed in this packet is audition music for your respective instrument for wind ensemble, chamber ensemble and jazz ensemble, if applicable. The same pieces will be used to determine placement in either wind ensemble or chamber ensemble. Jazz ensemble has separate audition music. Remember that these auditions are designed to help us place you in the ensemble that will best benefit you. Just concentrate on practicing the music over the next few weeks, a little at a time. Don’t let the music intimidate you into not auditioning, particularly the jazz ensemble music. If you have any questions or need help on any of the music, please don’t hesitate to contact the band hall and we will be happy to help you. If you did not receive the correct music or need a different instrument part, please contact the band hall as soon as possible.

Audition Dates are as follows:

TBA

Reminder that Colorguard and Twirling camp is August 2 nd through 5 th from 9AM to 5PM at the TJC Band Hall. Contact Mrs. Mensch if you have any questions. These dates are required for your scholarship.

Pit Percussion Camp:

Reminder that Pit Percussion camp is July 5 th through 9 th from 9AM to 5PM at the TJC Band Hall. Contact Mr. McGowan if you have any questions. These dates are required for your scholarship.

Drum Line Camp:

Reminder that Drum Line camp is July 19 th through 23 rd from 9AM to 5PM at the TJC Band Hall. Contact Mr. McGowan if you have any questions. These dates are required for your scholarship.

Band Camp:

All Sophomores report Thursday, August 5 from 9AM-Noon for training in the TJC Band Hall. Leadership Training for all student leaders will then follow from 1-5PM that same day. Student leaders will also be needed to assist the following day with Freshman training.

All Freshmen report Friday, August 6 from 9AM-5PM for training in the TJC Band Hall.

Registration:

Band camp registration is Saturday, August 7. We use this time to measure you for uniforms and order needed uniform parts. We have enclosed a sheet detailing the expenses you may need to pay and the time you will need to show up at the band hall. Again, if you have any questions, call the band hall.

  • All Returnees: 1-3PM
  • Freshman with last names beginning A-L: 3-4pm
  • Freshman with last names beginning M-Z 4-5pm

All Students then report for FULL Band Camp on Monday, August 9, from 9AM-5PM.

Band Camp will then run the entire week through Friday, August 13th. There will also be evening activities sponsored by our band service fraternity and sorority that are optional, but recommended for your social development. Lunch is on your own. One or two nights during the week, dinner will be provided. You will receive full details on the social activities during Registration on Saturday, August 7 th. Here’s a helpful hint. Don’t plan to work in the evenings during this first week of band camp. You’ll enjoy camp more, be able to rest, and be able to enjoy the social aspects of meeting new friends and getting used to a new school.

All Students will then report back on Monday, August 16th from 6-9pm for full band rehearsal. These rehearsals will continue each evening during that week, from Monday until Friday, August 20 th. This allows students to catch up on work missed the previous week, add and drop classes, buy books, and prepare for the first week of school.

These band camp dates are crucial for the success of our program. We begin learning drill the second or third day of band camp. If you miss days, you miss drill and throw the band behind or risk losing your spot to an alternate. Unlike high school, you are learning two shows, a pre-game show and a halftime show. Make sure you are at each and every day and hour of band camp during both weeks!

If you need housing during band camp, please contact the band hall prior to July 16 th, so that we can make arrangements for you.

If at any time you have questions regarding any of this information, please do not hesitate to call the band hall at (903) 510-2242.
