Ultimate Program Goal: Provide skilled
entry level employees for the multiple areas of automotive industry.
The Automotive Technology Program offers courses in the latest technologies available in the automotive service industry. In-depth training prepares you for an entry-level job or enables you to upgrade your job skills if you are currently employed. In the classroom you learn the theoretical aspects of automotive diagnosis, repair and service. You then apply what you learn while working on late model vehicles in the Skills Training Center labs. You may also gain work-force experience by working at an automotive service center or dealership partner while enrolled at TJC. TJC actively supports volunteer ASE technician certification and comply with NATEF requirements.
As a skilled technician, you may apply your specialized knowledge
in a particular area. As an employee or owner of a small service
business your expertise may require all areas. You may work in
a large dealership, in an independent service center, fleet,
in a specialty shop or for a mass merchandiser. Support businesses
such as parts stores and machine shops also need your technical
knowledge and skills. The program also offers training for Service
Consultants.
The U.S. Department of Labor projects that the automotive industry will be
a growth industry for the next several years. As a graduate of one of TJC's
four certificates or Associate Degree program coupled with two or three years
of trade experience, you can expect to earn $30,000-$50,000 a year. If you
go on to earn Master Diagnostic Technician status and proficiency, you can
earn $60,000-$70,000 per year or more. Many Associate Degree graduates find
their way into management positions with in 6-10 years of work experience.
For an associate's degree, you must complete a minimum of 50 credit hours in automotive technology in addition to a minimum of 12 credit hours in general education and 6 credit hours in electives.
