Message:Dick Johns, Class of 1947, dropped this memory off at our alumni Office..."News of the death of Bill Bates brought back some poignant memories of TJC's golden age, a dynamic era of re-birth for the school we love. The late 40's were a time of campus stars at TJC. The veterans of World War II were returning home, and the college, which was at the time no more than the second floor of one of Tyler High's two buildings, began bursting at the seams, initiating the climb from a handful of students to today's unimaginable heights. Our 'brain' star was Bobby Inman, who would later become a four-star admiral. Our athlete star was Bill Johnson, TJC's first All-America player and later head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals. Our politic star was Byron Tunnell, who would become Speaker of the Texas Hours of Representatives. Our faculty star was young Floyd Wagstaff, a once-in-a-lifetime renaissance man of his calling who recruited and coached championship teams in two different sports and whose unprecedented success in those arenas spawned the world famous Apache Belles of our drill team star Mildred Stringer. TJC is what it is today because of Floyd Wagstaff and the Apache Belles. And we had two art stars. One was A C Gentry, who would become the southwest's premier watercolorist, his work in demand across the region and outside its boundaries. The other was Bill Bates, the most naturally gifted manipulator of pencil, pen and brush whom I have ever known." Dick Johns

Message:Transitioning from John Tyler High in 1972 to TJC was hard at first because so many of my good friends had left Tyler for various colleges far away. But before long, I was so thankful for the faculty and new friends there. The growth and security I found there prepared me for success @ Pepperdine University in Malibu where I became the first female President of the Student Government Association and met then US Pres. Ford. I even got to"zip him into" his graduation robe!-just before the Pepperdine School of Law granted him an honorary doctorate. Thanks TJC for the wonderful fun and experiences under the wing of Dr. Browne. I'll NEVER forget how she made sure I received scholarships so that I wouldn't have to work so many hours and could take time out to be in the production of Medea and compete in Reader's Theatre, and Extemporaneous Speaking at Sam Houston State. Good Times indeed!

Message:A memorial service to honor former TJC band director and vice president Dr. Edwin Fowler was held on Saturday, May 9, at 11 a.m., at the Fifth Street Presbyterian Church, 1616 E. Fifth Street. Fowler died February 28 in Tyler. He came to TJC in 1947 as band instructor and retired in 1985 as vice president of student services. The 1953 Apache yearbook was dedicated to him. A passage in it reads: "We, the Apache staff of 1953, dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Edwin Fowler, affectionately known as 'Pinky.' His happy disposition, his cooperation in all college activities, and his wonderful sense of humor makes him a friend of all."

Message:Truly the glory days. I made my best, life-long friends at Tom-Tom Tech. My fondest memory, other than meeting my wife, was the winter the geese sculpture froze and broke in the Wise Plaza. (1983?) Randy Rocha and I passed out fliers announcing a memorial service for the flock. Songs were sung, a Eulogy was read... Silly... but lots of people attended!

Message:I have great memories of TJC and the law enforcement program that changed to Crij., as I graduated in 1980! Bennie Mims was the director/instructor for the program and he was a great instructor, as was Dennis Price. They were positive role models and assisted my peers and me a great deal in launching our careers. Bennie Mims encouraged me to pursue my B.S. at U.T.Tyler also in Crij. I completed it the Fall 0f 1990 at U.T. Tyler. Johnny Dark, Class of (Spring) 1980

Message:82-83 Only at TJC for a year, but what a year! Pledging Zeta, being a DU little sis, studing computer science under Mr. Harkrider (I think that was his name) trying to draw flow charts, oh, and being one of the very last students to take key punch! Made a lot of friends, kept up with one or two, would love to hear from more.

Message:Words absolutely can not express the wonderful memories that I have of TJC. Even the tough and trying times are not ones I would ever replace. I learned so much about life, love and people. TJC prepared me for more than just my educational or employment future. Sadly, some of the friends and loves have passed away, but not a day goes by that they aren't with me and those times are with me. I can still feel myself there, laughing with them, crying and growing. Thank you Tyler Jr. College, for being one of the BEST experiences in my life! Sincerely, Tami
