The Surgical Technology Program has "selective admissions." Approximately 12-15 students are admitted each fall. Students must compete against other candidates for admittance. The criteria used are all awarded a numerical value, and the candidates with the most points are invited to come back for an interview. After the interview, applicants are notified if they have been chosen to become a surgical technology student at Tyler Junior College.
The student must document THEA or an alternate test (Accuplacer) passage or exemption prior to application. THEA is a Texas State exam. For more information contact the Program Director (903) 510-2962.
Points are awarded to: Course grades, overall or cumulative grade point average (GPA), whether student is in district, documented, hands on, patient care experience, and whether or not the qualified student already has a degree.
*=heavily weighted (BIOL 2401 and 2402 or Anatomy and Physiology I and II and BIOL 2420 or Microbiology)
REQUIRED COURSES: May be taken before admittance. Must take at least one college level science course and two other courses to apply. It is very difficult to accumulate enough points for acceptance without science course points.
BIOL 2404 and/or BIOL 2401 AND BIOL 2402
HITT 1305 (Medical Terminology Part I) and HITT 1303 (Medical Terminology Part II)
